Santa Barbara Beach Walk (dog friendly)

If you’re looking for a beautiful and relaxing beach in Santa Barbara, you might want to check out Hendry’s Beach. Also known as Arroyo Burro Beach Park, this scenic spot is located off of Cliff Drive, about 5 miles west of Santa Barbara’s city center. Here are some reasons why Hendry’s Beach is a great destination for locals and visitors alike.

  • Hendry’s Beach has a wide sandy shore that stretches for about half a mile, offering plenty of space for sunbathing, picnicking, playing and relaxing. You can enjoy the views of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, as well as watch the surfers and paddle boarders ride the waves. The beach is also a popular spot for dog owners, as they can walk their pets off leash on the eastern section below the Douglas Family Preserve, a 70-acre open space park on top of the coastal bluffs.
  • Hendry’s Beach has a variety of amenities and facilities that make it convenient and comfortable for visitors. There is a large free parking lot, restrooms, showers, drinking fountains, picnic tables, barbecue grills and a grassy area. There is also a lifeguard tower and a ranger station for safety and information. If you’re hungry or thirsty, you can visit the Boathouse at Hendry’s Beach, a restaurant and snack bar that serves fresh seafood and other dishes with spectacular ocean views. The Boathouse is open daily from 7:30 am to 9:30 pm (or midnight on Fridays).
  • Hendry’s Beach has an interesting history and an educational value for those who want to learn more about the local environment and culture. The beach is named after William Nicol Hendry, a Scottish immigrant who leased over 360 acres of land in the area in the late 1800s and raised his twelve children there. The beach is also the terminus of Arroyo Burro Creek, which drains from the Santa Ynez Mountains and flows into the ocean. The creek is home to various wildlife species, such as steelhead trout, frogs, turtles and birds. The Watershed Resource Center, located next to the parking lot, is an ecological education center that offers exhibits, programs and events to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the watershed and the marine ecosystem.

Hendry’s Beach is open daily from 8:00 am to sunset. It is one of Santa Barbara’s most picturesque and popular beaches, offering something for everyone. Whether you want to enjoy the sun, the sand, the surf or the scenery, you’ll find it at Hendry’s Beach.
